Several American states warned of an effort to overthrow Bolivia’s government

The United States and several American states issued a joint statement saying efforts to overthrow Bolivia’s government posed a grave threat to constitutional order and democratic stability. They accused a small violent minority of trying to overturn the will expressed in recent elections. Bolivia had faced weeks of road blockades and protests over fuel-subsidy cuts, dollar shortages and rising living costs. The government declared a state of emergency and deployed security forces to clear roads, but restoring traffic does not resolve the economic stress behind the crisis.
