France reported around 1,000 excess deaths during the heatwave as European records fell

Europe’s heatwave kept moving east as French health authorities reported around 1,000 excess deaths during the period, mostly among older people. Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and other countries also broke heat records, with some areas passing 40C. Transport, power, healthcare and fire services all came under pressure, while the WHO warned Europe remains underprepared for more frequent heatwaves.
