The UK government formally apologises for postwar forced adoptions

Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologised for the British state's role in forced adoptions between 1949 and 1976, when about 185,000 babies of unmarried mothers were adopted amid social pressure and institutional involvement. The government pledged support for records access, family tracing and testimony preservation.
