Surigae is forecast to become a typhoon today

The Hong Kong Observatory's 10 a.m. September 26 update placed Severe Tropical Storm Surigae about 1,330 kilometers east of Hong Kong at 8 a.m., with maximum sustained winds near 105 kilometers per hour. It was forecast to intensify while moving toward waters near the Ryukyu Islands, reaching typhoon strength around 8 a.m. September 27 with winds near 140 kilometers per hour and about 145 kilometers per hour on September 28, before turning northeast south of Japan. The track raises wind, wave, aviation and shipping risks for the Ryukyus and nearby routes, but landfall and rainfall cannot be fixed from one forecast. Residents and operators should use rolling updates from local weather agencies, ports and airlines.
