First UN International Coffee Day centers the people behind each cup
October 1, 2026 is the first International Coffee Day following its establishment by the UN General Assembly. FAO's Geneva office and the permanent missions of Indonesia, Rwanda and Türkiye are marking it under the theme Celebrating Coffee, Honouring the People Behind Every Cup, examining coffee's economic, social, environmental and cultural significance. The focus reaches beyond consumer culture to how the value chain supports grower and worker livelihoods, rural development, food security and sustainable agrifood systems, while connecting producing and consuming markets through dialogue. The observance does not publish new income, price or distribution metrics. The follow-through is producer earnings, climate adaptation, labor conditions and how value is divided along the chain.
