5.8 million school-age refugee children remain out of school
UNHCR's 2026 Refugee Education Report estimates that 5.8 million of the world's 13.1 million school-age refugee children, or 44%, were out of school in 2025. Gross enrolment was 65% at primary level, 32% at secondary and 11% in tertiary education; in low-income and conflict-affected countries, tertiary enrolment was only 2%. The report warns that cuts to humanitarian and development aid could further constrain teachers, facilities and support to national education systems. These are cross-country estimates and gross rates, not direct measures of net attendance or education quality in every host country.
