Autonomous quantum correction extends logical lifetime to about 11.6 ms

A Nature Physics study encoded a logical qubit in multiple internal spin states of one trapped ion and demonstrated autonomous correction beyond the break-even point. Conventional schemes often measure error syndromes, apply real-time feedback and spread encoding across multiple physical qubits, adding control complexity and new error paths. The team engineered spin-motion coupling to transfer error-induced entropy into ion motion, then dissipated it through sympathetic cooling with an ancilla ion. Under injected low-frequency magnetic noise, repeated correction extended logical-qubit lifetime to about 11.6 ms, far beyond roughly 0.9 ms for the physical qubit and 0.8 ms for the uncorrected logical qubit. The experiment demonstrates a hardware-efficient path to quantum memory, not a completed general fault-tolerant computer. Scaling still has to solve multi-qubit gates, cycle errors and system integration.
