Two Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine candidates will join an outbreak-time clinical trial
WHO expert groups recommended adding ChAdOx1 from Oxford and the Serum Institute of India, plus Moderna's mRNA-1469, to the ongoing Tumaini clinical trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; this is the first outbreak-time evaluation of vaccines designed specifically for Bundibugyo virus. Tumaini uses ring vaccination to enrol contacts of confirmed cases in one multi-candidate platform, with four rings already active. National approvals are still required, results are expected in early 2027, and WHO stresses that vaccines alone will not end the outbreak.
