Annual cervical-cancer deaths could reach 522,000 by 2050

A Nature Medicine modelling study combined cervical-cancer data from 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023 and projected trends to 2050. It estimates 887,000 new cases and 369,000 deaths in 2023; if current trends continue, annual cases reach 1.08 million, 20.2% above 2024, while deaths rise 39.3% to 522,000. Sub-Saharan Africa faces the largest increase, with deaths potentially rising 95.4% to 206,000. The forecast is limited by data gaps in lower-income settings and does not include future effects of expanded HPV vaccination programmes.
