Dream-1 starts work on robots it has never seen
Dream Labs released the Dream-1 world action model in October and opened a public API. The company says a new bimanual robot with parallel grippers can connect and begin performing tasks the model has never seen on hardware and in environments it has never encountered, without robot-specific fine-tuning or demonstrations. Public pricing starts at $3 per hour. The goal is to break robotics' cold start: cheaper hardware gains useful capability early, then real use creates data that can improve later models. Dream Labs says a capable bimanual setup can cost as little as about $2,000 and announced a $90 million seed round alongside the launch. Capability, generalization, failure-rate and cost evidence is currently vendor-reported, without broad independent cross-platform benchmarks. Deployment still needs tests for dexterity, safe stopping, occlusion, long-task recovery, network latency, liability and total cost after hardware, maintenance and human oversight.
