Today's overview: eight stories, one changing world

1. University of Sydney researchers found that fractal basins can send nearly identical deep-learning runs to different outcomes, while the best-performing settings are often the least reproducible. 2. Hong Kong solo SaaS Bank Statement Converter turns bank-statement PDFs into Excel or CSV for accountants and small businesses at $30–99 a month, with founder-reported MRR of $16,000. 3. Goodie AI uses AI to read food labels for seed oils, sugar and gut triggers, with RevenueCat-connected data verifying $11,500 MRR and about 3,700 active subscriptions. 4. KOKUYO used content, campaigns, influencers and search to sell stationery overseas, taking February–July 2026 off-season sales to 310% and average order value to 130% of the prior year. 5. Researchers directly observed hydrogen dissolved between metal atoms for the first time, giving experimental evidence for hydrogen embrittlement and more resistant alloy design. 6. Cancer-linked E2F1 can activate cell-cycle genes without substantially unpacking chromatin and drive up to three divisions without extra growth signals. 7. Catalonia's Cova de la Font Major yielded 280 Palaeolithic engravings, including 55 animal figures, reshaping the cave-art map of north-eastern Iberia. 8. Marine terraces up to about 1,000 metres high in southern Italy are rising five to ten times faster than assumed, supporting evidence that the Ionian slab is tearing beneath Calabria.

Deep learning has a fractal-basin limit to predictability

University of Sydney researchers reported in Nature Machine Intelligence that fractal basin geometry can explain why neural networks reach different outcomes after tiny disturbances, even in fully deterministic settings. The parameter regions that enabled the strongest learning were also harder to predict and reproduce; lowering the learning rate improved repeatability but reduced learning effectiveness. The team introduced tools for measuring this sensitivity and points to architectural redesign as a future way to reduce unstable conditions. The result does not mean AI is inevitably uncontrollable; it means reliable evaluation must report distributions across runs and the cost of reproducibility, not only a single best score.

Solo Bank Statement Converter reports $16,000 MRR

Former Hong Kong financial engineer Angus Cheng sells a bank-statement PDF converter to accountants, small businesses and people organizing transactions, with subscriptions around $30–99 a month. In a Founder Reports interview he reported $16,000 MRR, roughly $500 in monthly operating costs and no employees, contractors or freelancers; the revenue is founder-reported rather than payment-processor verified. Early spending of about $5,000 on Google Ads lost money, and cold email converted roughly one in 1,000 before his Gmail account was blocked. Blog content and organic search survived as acquisition, while upload and conversion are self-serve. Limits include the age of the figure, unaudited current profit, financial-file security and ongoing accuracy support.

Goodie AI food-label scanner verifies $11,500 MRR

Goodie AI combines OCR and AI ingredient analysis in a consumer food scanner. Users photograph a label to check for seed oils, added sugar and personal gut triggers; the app is free to install, with full analysis monetized through subscriptions or in-app purchases. The AI Receipts read TrustMRR's RevenueCat-connected data on November 5 and reported about $11,500 MRR and roughly 3,700 active subscriptions, with TikTok and Meta ads listed as acquisition channels. Cash collected over the last 30 days was about $4,600, below MRR, while 30-day MRR movement was about minus 9.6%, so cash and subscription run rate must be separated. Costs and profit are unverified; health-adjacent claims, OCR errors, retention and store fees are material risks.

KOKUYO's cross-border off-season sales reached 310% year over year

KOKUYO and Lingble operate an overseas D2C stationery business that entered its second year with weak sales outside the Jibun Techo planner preorder season. The team expanded content, campaigns, influencer work and search acquisition while turning the WP Fine Writer into a new hit product. The service-provider case says February–July 2026 off-season sales reached 310% of the prior year and average order value reached 130%. Thirty-two SEO articles also became new-customer entry points, while sales data informed a move toward local inventory. The reviewed partner case does not disclose the GMV baseline, gross margin, ad spend, logistics or returns, so the profit mechanism is stronger off-season demand and order value, not the 310% headline by itself.

Hydrogen is directly observed dissolved between metal atoms for the first time

A University of Sydney team reported in Nature the first direct observation of hydrogen occupying interstitial spaces inside a metal-alloy lattice, rather than only appearing as hydrides or at defects. Hydrogen atoms are exceptionally small and mobile, making their positions inside materials difficult to locate; the new observations also show that atomic arrangement and chemistry influence where hydrogen prefers to reside. The result helps explain why hydrogen entering pipelines and storage equipment can make strong metals crack unexpectedly and provides experimental foundations for more hydrogen-resistant alloys. This remains mechanism research, not a solved engineering problem; deployment still needs cross-scale validation and lifetime testing.

E2F1 triggers cell division by bypassing the usual unpacking step

UC Santa Cruz researchers found that E2F1, a protein disrupted in many cancers, can bind a small region of still tightly packed DNA and switch on cell-cycle genes without the substantial chromatin unpacking used in ordinary division. Cells sense an E2F1 threshold; once crossed, dormant cells begin dividing. Without additional growth signals, the shortcut drove at most three divisions and acted faster than the typical nutrient-driven process. The work suggests that some cancer cells may exploit this mechanism, but researchers have not yet identified which cancers depend on it or a molecule that safely blocks it. It is a potential target mechanism, not an available treatment.

A popular cave yields 280 Palaeolithic engravings

Research reported by Antiquity documents 280 Palaeolithic graphic units in Catalonia's Cova de la Font Major, including 55 depictions of horses, deer, bovids, caprines and a rare bear. The cave has received visitors for about seven decades, while some shallow grooves remained hidden among modern graffiti and walls worn by touch; researchers had to change torch angles to make them visible. Many figures are attributed to pre-Magdalenian phases around 26,000 years ago, making the site one of the largest cave-art assemblages on Mediterranean Iberia. Preservation and the dates of some motifs remain uncertain, and public access makes protection more urgent.

Southern Italy's marine-terrace uplift is revised five to ten times higher

A University of Oregon-led team sampled marine terraces up to about 1,000 metres above sea level in southern Calabria and used luminescence dating to challenge the long-held assumption that the landforms were roughly one million years old and beyond the method's range. The new results indicate that the terraces are younger than most geologists inferred and may be rising five to ten times faster. The team argues this supports an Ionian slab tearing beneath Calabria rather than only older explanations. The Siculo-Calabrian rift belt spans more than 160 kilometres and has a history of strong earthquakes; the model can improve hazard assessment but cannot predict the date or magnitude of a specific event.
